Isaac
George (I.G.) Holmes died Thursday, November 6,
2008. He was a devoted husband, father and brother,
as well as a beloved friend and mentor to countless
numbers of people whom he met throughout his life.
Born April 25, 1925 to Isaac and Josephine Holmes of
Abernathy, he graduated from Abernathy High in 1941
and attended Texas Tech prior to enlisting in the US
Marine Corps at age 17.
He served in the South Pacific. In 1947 I. G. began
his career as a photographer, which spanned almost
62 years. During that time, he recorded much history
of Lubbock and the area. His aerial photographs
captured the story of progress and development in
Lubbock, including the 1960 move of the Jones
Stadium stands, rebuilding after the Lubbock
tornado, and the Overton project. He also preserved
the history of area families, copying and restoring
cherished family photos.
He was a member of the South Plains Professional
Photographers Association, Texas PP of A, and the
Professional Photographers of America, earning its
highest certification as Master of Photography and
Photographic Craftsman. In 2007, the Professional
Aerial Photographers Association International
bestowed on him its Lifetime Achievement Award. He
was an active member of Lubbock Executive
Association and other civic groups over the years.
During his long tenure as a photographer, he never
hesitated to provide advice and assistance to others
who were entering the field. He believed that he had
been helped by those who had gone before him, and it
was his duty and his privilege to mentor younger or
aspiring photographers.
True to his nature, his tissue donation to LifeGift
will continue to help others, even after death.
I.G.’s life was celebrated Sunday, November 9, 2008
at Lake Ridge Chapel. Following the service, friends
and family gathered to share their memories of him.
He will be missed by Sheri, his wife of 40 years,
his sons Jon of Lubbock, Don of Fort Worth, and Dan
of Maui, HI, a grandson Andrew of Boston, as well as
his sister and brother-in-law, Imogene and Gene
Sorley, and several nieces and nephews.
