2006 News
>>>December 2006...Another Christmas party
come and gone. It had been a while since we had all gotten together,
so it was really nice to see everyone that attended. Kathy Dabbs
invited us to her beautiful home for our party this year. We all
got to catch up with one another and to visit with those we seldom
get to see. We met some new members and got to learn about them and
they about some of us. It was really a relaxing enjoyable evening.
For that, we thank you Kathy.
Ken Strouth and Sam Hollis were made honorary members. Ken reminded
us to all enjoy what we are doing and to not forget to have some fun
along the way. Brenda Williams was presented her Associate
Fellowship.
We can never say it often enough...we are very lucky to have the
wonderful members we have and for all of them to be so giving of
their time and knowledge. Thank all of you for that!

November 2006>>>Congratulations to our own
Jody Smyers for having his photo on the cover of FAA Air Traffic
Organization FY2005 Annual Performance Report: Moving America
Safely.
Way to go Jody!!

We also want to welcome our new members,
Suzanne McFarland, Raenee Mata and Joseph Froeschle. We are glad to
have you in the guild.
September>>>>Our meeting was awesome!
Thanks to Trina and Bryan Fullingim who opened up there beautiful
home to all of us and cooked us all a fantastic chuck wagon meal!!
Our dinner was cooked on the ground with dutch ovens and open
flames. The open flame gave the food a wonderful flavor. And as we
all know, food always taste better when you are outdoors. We
couldn't have asked for a better night!
Trina and Bryan worked out of his chuck wagon that he took 2 years
to restore. And a beautiful job he has done. He was just this past
weekend, awarded the National Champion wagon at the National Cowboy
Symposium, right here in Lubbock. That is a huge honor, but
especially for a first year veteran. He also won 1st place in
the meat division at that same National competition. He has
been cooking on the ground with dutch ovens about 3 years. He
has cooked for some very high dignitaries, one of the highest being
hall of fame cowboys and the Base Realignment Committee (BRAC)
committee.
After dinner Jon Thompson was our guest speaker and he filled us in
on the world of corporate photography. He ran us through what
a typical day for him may be like and showed us some of the work
that they do. We all know that they put together the ads that we
receive, but they also have calendars, window coverings, menu boards
and promotional ads.
Jon even set up a shoot using the food that had been prepared, while
using the Fullingims chuck wagon in the background.
Jon was also our print competition judge. First place went to Cyndi
Dupont, second place to Jody Smyers and third to John Barnhart.
Congratulation everyone!!!

August 6th & 7th>>>WOW!!! That is what we
are all still saying about the benefit. If you missed it, you missed
a very heart warming experience. I do not think any of us, in all
the planning ever dreamed that we would have the outcome that we
did.
Just let me say, Ken Porter can fill a room,
a big room. The Merket was full!! Full of people with love and
compassion. It was awesome to see that there are so many people
willing to reach out and help. Not just from our community, but from
all over.
We want to thank all of you that played a
part in Ken's Benefit! There was a lot of hard work that went into
it and that hard work paid off. Thank you all for the work, the time
and the donations that you contributed. Thank you too for those that
gathered up donations from other sources.
I can only speak for myself, but this was an
experience that made quiet an impression in my mind and in my
heart. Thanks to so many wonderful people!
It is really awesome to belong to such a
wonderful association!
Thank you all!

>>> February's Photoshop Class
This month we had two of our members Cory Sinklier and Robert
Suddarth working with us on techniques in Photoshop. Cory worked
with us on the beginners level and Robert on the advanced level. There
was a lot of information gone over in our all day workshop. We worked on
things from changing the color of an article of clothing, actions,
changing images to black and white, grouping several images into one, to
covering blemishes in our subjects complexion, stretching our background
and batching. Our thanks to Cory and Robert for taking the time to teach
us such a useful program!
We had several new members to join yesterday also. We want to
welcome them. They are Terri Bennett, Rocky Hamilton, Pamra Culp
and Don Race.

think about with his topic of " The 80% of Photography we love to hate."
He went over such things as time management, goals, operations, policies
and procedures, work flow, basic digital rules, sales and many other
things we should apply and think of in our own businesses. It was a very
informative meeting.
We also elected officers for the year of 2006. They are as follows:
President
Kathy Dabbs
Vice President Brenda Williams
Secretary
Lauren Clark

>>>December...Christmas Party..Everyone had a great time at this
years Christmas Party at the Canyon House at Escondido Canyon Event
Center. We enjoyed seeing faces that we don't get to see at some of our
meetings. We were so glad to see these members. We had a great meal and
afterwards there were several awards given. Mark McCall was
awarded a Full Fellowship Award. The following members were all awarded
SPPPA Associate Fellowship Awards; Harley Bynum, Kathy Dabbs, Don
Dickson, Trina Fullingim, Cory Sinklier, Robert Suddarth and Tina
Thompson. Congratulations to those who earned these awards. Great
work!! Kathy and Tina had put together a slide show of photos,
some older photos of the longer standing members and some newer ones of
things the association had done this year.
It was announced that several members have and are opening new studios or
are moving existing ones. Brenda Williams gave us an insight on some of
the things we can look forward to for next year. One thing that we all
agreed on last night, was how lucky we are to be active members of an
association of people that we all respect and can depend on. It is
wonderful to know that if at anytime we need help, we know that someone
will be there with a helping hand and will gladly give of their time and
knowledge. For that we are all very thankful and fortunate. Thank you
all for making the SPPPA what it is. Wonderful!!
>>>November Meeting...If
you missed this months SPPPA Meeting, not only did we miss you, but you
missed a really great meeting packed full of a lot of information.
Our guest speaker was Waldo Berry. Waldo covered everything from wireless
uploads, archiving your work, presentation cd's to Folio Portrait
Mounts. He also went over advertising yourself, making your own music,
work flow, computer drives, levels of redundancy and programs to make
your job easier for you.
He really stressed the importance of knowing exposure, lighting and
posing. He also said get it right the first couple of shots and don't
work your customers to death.
Waldo also was the judge for our print competition. We were all anxious
to hear his opinion of our images. !st place & 2nd place winners were

McCall's class on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 23rd & 24th. Mark is the
webmaster for a variety of photographic and wedding websites including
SWPPA
and
BSA.
Mark went through everything from how to pick out your template to
adding buttons, photos, information and personalizing your own website.
He showed us how to change the colors, add our email and website
information and download our price list. There was a lot of helpful
information on everything that he went over. And as usual, he made it
look easy! We all know different though, don't we. Thanks Mark for
sharing all of this with us!!

>>>October Meeting....At this meeting we critiqued our shots
that we took at the Shoot Out last month. We went through all of the
images and someone from that group would answer any questions that were
asked about the image. We really had a lot of good images. A
lot of good ideas and suggestions come from this meeting. After we went
through all the images, Mark Umstot put his touches to one of the bridal
portraits and showed us how we can rework the photo and make it look
quite different.
We also had a new member to join. We would like to welcome Anne Hinds.

>>>August Meeting...Hi everyone! It has
been awhile since our last meeting. Everyone was busy with Kerrville in
June and the Swim Party at The Dickson's in July. I hear that both were
a big hit! We had a really good meeting this month.
Guest Speaker Dinah Hodges came and spoke
with us on graphic design, color selection and type style.
Dinah graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Design Communications
in 2001. After graduating she worked as a graphic designer for
the agency Fellers, now known as R C and P. A position at Texas Tech in
the Marketing and Promotions office followed. In the fall of 2004 she
opened Hodgepodge Design Studio and Boutique where she now
freelances and focuses on custom invitations and announcements. Her work
has won several local Addy's awards and has been featured in CMYK
magazine. We want to welcome our two newest members! They are John King

>>May's Meeting was Trina
Fullingim telling about her experience at Texas School. "I
took Fuzzy Dunkel's class and loved it. It was entitled "Go Away!"
and was about doing senior photography on location only. He uses
reflectors and natural light almost exclusively, and only uses flash
when absolutely necessary. Some of the program was very in depth,
and then some of it was pretty basic. He showed us different ways to
build reflectors and how to "tie down" our reflector stands. I would
recommend the class to anyone interested in getting out of the
studio on a regular basis. He charges $800 upfront, which includes
the session, a 20" portrait, unlimited clothing changes, and an 8
image folio. Very low volume...high end sales. I wouldn't recommend
his style for anyone wanting to build a business. But for me, it was
exactly what I like."
Print Competition Winners..
1st and 2nd place went to Lauren Clark, while Mark McCall won 3rd
place.
